The vehicles

The construction of the vehicles takes about 15-45 hours per piece which is due to the amount of technique included. The chassis frame of the Faller-Car-System or completely self-constructions form the basis. As the order transmission via infrared isn’t possible, the receipt of orders happens with a legally protected system, which is momentarily only in use selectively, but the completion with radio reception is quite far advanced. However, most of the vehicles are still designated for the infrared reception (in case of an error by hand-held transmitter). From the next version on there will be a third way of transmission which is radio and the fourth way will be induction. All systems are working steadily during the tests, however, the radio reception will probably be vanished soon because it is very vulnerable. The main problem is: a constant intervisibility is necessary.

The mere infrared system worked acceptable during the first tests, it may work well with small layouts of 2-3 vehicles, but not with a 900 sqm large layout. After a quite long testing phase we’ve developed a different concept which now works almost faultless. Error quantity: 1:20000 compared to infrared approx. 1:100 (with flat construction) and compared to radio approx. 1:2500. The vehicles have the following features (last update: Version 5.4.2 - 13.12.2003):  

  • Indicators left, 
  • Indicators right, 
  • Warning lights on/off, 
  • Lights on/off, 
  • Bluelight on/off – here there are 4 alternatives (beacon, double flash, etc), 
  • Front lights on/off (the blue lights, which modern fire apparatuses have in the radiator grill) – here there are 7 different alternatives 
  • 10 speed levels, 
  • Automatic intermittent engine cutoff in case of an accident for the protection of the motor,
  • Cruise control, 
  • stoplight, self-contained control of the battery (the result is transmitted to the PC by a deliberate change of the driving speed), 
  • supporting features for the charging of the battery, which happens automatically at the exterior mirrors (the vehicle communicates e.g. information about the quality and the warmth development of the battery to the computer controlled recharger. The recharger analyses the data and communicates them to the PC)
  • Moreover, 8 special features are available which are different depending on the demand of the vehicle (e.g. fog lights, light in driver’s cab, soundmodul, high beam light, lighting system Love-Parade-Truck, fire light (up to 48 LEDs), ...)
  • 14 exits for bluelights / flashs have been realised for the American alternative.

Technique of the vehicles:

The heart of the vehicles is a microprocessor which controls all operations. It is located on a 15mm x 35mm large board which contains all control components (if necessary it can be divided into two parts). The recharging of the battery happens on the exterior mirrors as a recharging on the undercarriage was impossible due to the different constitution of the vehicles. Nickel metallic hydrides batteries of the company GP (here we want to thank Mr. Rosentreter for his endeavour) are used as batteries. All lights are realised by SMD LEDs (the Coke Truck has special electric features for its 142 lights).
