Hamburger Kunsthalle

The members of the Hamburger Kunstverein, founded in 1817, called for an art museum in Hamburg in 1846. Thereupon, a number of different paintings have been donated and the first art collection emerged. After some time the collection became larger and the exhibition room was too small. From 1863 to 1869 a brick building has been built from donations of Hamburg's people. The piece of real estate has been provided by the city.

Today the Hamburger Kunsthalle comprises the old building with its extension and the new Galerie der Gegenwart (Gallery of the present), which was opened in 1997. Today there are more than 13,000 sqm of exhibition and event area.
